About the artist

Maheen Sheikh’s practice explores her own personal healing journey by examining the inner child, the inner teenager, and significant life events. Utilizing mixed media, she creates texture, depth, and interactivity in her work. Influenced by the Fauvism movement, she approaches colour as an expression of emotion rather than in a traditional sense, leading to a focus on abstraction while still incorporating elements of realism. Maheen’s work also reflects themes of inequality, drawing from her experiences as a working-class individual of South Asian ethnicity and as a lesbian within their community.
